Parallel and Polarized Patterns: The Relation between Labor, Other Left and "New" Left Mobilization

To a large extent, declining NSM activity (events) is paralleled by some other "left" movements. This parallel is actually not that surprising when considering that these movements, such as the student, the civil rights, and other left-wing movements, are as dependent on the PS as the new movements. As Figure 5.5 shows, their activities declined sharply in 1981, increased when Chirac came to power in 1986, and declined once more after the left resumed power in 1988 (Rocard). (See Appendix Β for governments, etc.)
